Without doubt some owners choose the name of their horse specifically to wind up the commentators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it\u2019s not all fun! Sometimes owners name horses after people they love, people who may have passed on and they want to keep their memory alive or pay homage to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For anyone who has bred dogs, cats or horses and needs to register them, coming up with a name can be a more cryptic affair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Red Rum, for instance, that grand old national winner, was named by taking the last three letters of the names of his dam and sire, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes naming a horse is a question of persistence. The owners of the great American horse Secretariat submitted five different nominations to the jockey club before they finally accepted a name. It was coined by the yard\u2019s secretary, Elizabeth Ham, from her previous official title when working in the United Nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some horse names can remind their owners of happy places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three times Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Arkle was named after a mountain overlooking his new owner\u2019s home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, naming your horses is as old as time. Bucephalas was the horse of Alexander the Great and one of the most famous horses of classical antiquity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
