Long Awaited UK Gambling Regs Due
After intense lobbying in recent months, the UK Government is expected to announce the first major regulatory changes to gambling in almost 20 years.
The new White Paper on gambling has been on the verge of being announced since July 2022 but is expected in the coming weeks.
While the sector is still waiting to find the actual detail, key battlegrounds include:
- A statutory levy for gambling firms
- Affordability checks
- Tighter controls on marketing and advertising
- Maximum stake for online slots
With the last major piece of legislation – the Gambling Act 2005 – nearly two decades old, campaigners are hoping the new regulations will take into account the significant technological developments in the iGaming sector which have taken place since.
Former Conservative leader Sir Iain Duncan Smith is part of an All Party Parliamentary Group on gambling-related harm. He told the BBC that “We’re not out to stamp out gambling. We want to have it better regulated, so it traps fewer people in spirals of debt.”
The new legislation could see an end to gambling companies being allowed to advertise on football shirts.
